Dry Extrusion Granulator vs Rotary Drum Granulator: Which One Fits Your Organic Fertilizer Plant

2026-10-15

If you plan to set up an organic fertilizer production line, choosing the right granulator is one of the most critical decisions. Dry extrusion granulators and rotary drum granulators are the two mainstream granulation equipment widely used for compost and manure processing. Each has its own working logic, suitable materials and operating costs.

Working Principle Difference

The dry extrusion granulator adopts normal-temperature physical extrusion molding. Powder materials are squeezed through mould holes directly, and cylindrical pellets are formed without adding extra water or drying procedure.

The rotary drum granulator belongs to wet granulation. Materials rely on rolling and bonding inside the rotating drum to form round pellets. Additional water or binder is required, and a drying system is necessary after granulation.

Suitable Raw Materials

Dry extrusion granulator works better for well-fermented dry powder materials with low moisture. It is ideal for users who want to skip drying steps and simplify the whole production flow.

Rotary drum granulator is more tolerant of slightly wet materials. It is preferred when you need spherical fertilizer pellets for better appearance and market sales.

Cost & Maintenance

Dry extrusion granulation lines save the investment on drying and cooling equipment, with lower energy consumption. The main wearing part is the mould, which needs regular inspection and replacement.

Rotary drum granulator can reach larger hourly output. But the supporting dryer increases total power consumption and long-term operation cost. The drum lining and scraper are regular consumables.

Quick Selection Suggestion

Choose dry extrusion granulator if you have limited budget, want simple workshop layout, and accept cylindrical pellets.

Choose rotary drum granulator if you pursue round finished granules, have enough budget for auxiliary drying equipment, and run a large-scale production plant.

There is no absolute better option. Your raw material condition, target pellet shape, factory space and budget will finally decide the suitable granulation solution. If you are confused about matching equipment configuration, you can send your production requirement for a custom layout plan.
